Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend Kickoffs with Wine Celebrity Laura CatenaJanuary 25, 2017
Charity Auction of Wines Direct from Argentinian Winery Produces Frenzied Bidding
The twenty-eighth annual Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend (CWFW) kicked off on Thursday, January 19, at the fourth annual Wells Fargo Kickoff Dinner. The dinner and auction took place at One Wells Fargo Center overlooking the city of Charlotte. The visiting winemaker from the iconic Bodega Catena Zapata, Laura Catena, donated wine and experience auction lots that sold on average over four times pre-auction estimates.
“To witness the tremendous response of the Catena wines for such an important cause was truly amazing,” said Laura Catena, fourth generation vintner and pediatric Emergency Medicine physician. “I can confidently say that this was the most elegant and well organized charity wine event that I have ever attended.”
With a momentous $125,000 raised at the sold-out event, Catena and Luca wine and wine experiences accounted for over two thirds of the evening proceeds. Direct from the winery lots included, all signed:
- 6L of 2009 Catena Zapata Argentino Malbec in wooden box
- Six three-pack verticals of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Catena Zapata Nicolas
- Five separate Adrianna Vineyard 3-packs in wooden cases, including the 100-point 2013 Fortuna Terrae Malbec
- 3L bottles of 2010 Nico by Luca Malbec
- Six bottles of 2013 Beso de Dante
The highlights of the charity auction were a luxurious trip to Argentina to visit the Catena winery, stay at the family estate, and participate in one-of-a-kind activities and tastings; and a private tasting and dinner with Laura Catena for 16 people at New York Vintners in New York City with 12 of her best wines, donated by David & Pam Furr. Other experience lots included a quail hunting overnight trip at the Fork Farm and Stables, and a VIP trip to the Spoleto Festival in Charleston.
“Tonight continued our strong tradition of bringing the best wines in the world to Charlotte,” said David Furr, Chairman. “Laura thrilled our guests with her stories and her wines and their response in the auction was evident. It was a great night for the children of Charlotte and we are excited to donate event proceeds to our charities.”
The beneficiaries for the 2017-18 Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend are Charlotte Concerts, Council for Children’s Rights, Mitchell’s Fund, Pat’s Place Child Advocacy Center, and The Relatives. Sponsors for the evening included Title Sponsor, Wells Fargo, and wine sponsors, LaCa Projects and Foreign Cars Italia.
“We are more than grateful for the donations from Laura Catena, our private donors and our sponsors,” said Executive Director, Dockery Clark. “This is the third Kickoff Dinner in a row we raised over six figures in one night, and with the proceeds donated to our charities, we want to thank everyone who participated in support of our mission. We hope to see everyone again in April for more great wine, food and charitable giving.”
The 2017 Weekend takes place April 19-22, 2017. The schedule includes in-home dinners at the homes of some of Charlotte’s most generous benefactors, dinners at Charlotte’s best restaurants paired with wineries from around the world, an auction and casual tastings, all benefiting the five children’s charities.
